Precision Environmental Assembles Rapid Response to Decontaminate Manufacturing Plant

In the spring of 2001, Precision Environmental was contacted about a critical problem at a local international manufacturing plant: the outbreak of a potentially deadly waterborne organism that causes Legionnaire's Disease, an infection of the lungs similar to pneumonia, but far less common, yet more frequently resulting in death.

The bacteria that cause Legionnaire's Disease can thrive inside of devices that produce aerosolization of a suspected water source, such as cooling systems, filtering systems, and cooling towers. The bacteria are not eradicated by the chlorination used to purify domestic water systems. Low and even nondetectable levels of the organism can colonize a water source and grow to high concentrations under the right conditions. It is believed that a cooling tower was the source of the Legionnaire's contamination at this manufacturing plant.

After two cases of Legionnaire's were confirmed among employees of the plant, the manufacturing plant was shut down to both protect from further infection and to determine the source of the outbreak. Precision Environmental was contacted to perform an emergency cleanup of the plant.

Two hours after the call from the client was received, Precision Environmental had a crew deployed at the site to begin the cleanup. This rapid response was critical to the client and its employees. Precision was able to mechanically clean, and then disinfect the plant with the assistance of the local representatives of BetzDearborn Inc. over the course of one weekend allowing for normal plant operations to resume as soon as possible.
